Getting a COVID shot this fall might look a little different from state to state, but here in Washington, it’s pretty simple: all people ages 6 months and up can get the updated (2025-26) COVID vaccine. Here’s what you need to know.
Who should get a COVID shot this fall?
The short answer: it’s a good idea for everyone! No matter your age or health, vaccination can protect you from severe illness and Long COVID. The slightly longer answer: we strongly recommend that certain people at higher risk get vaccinated, including:
Children and adults with conditions that put them at risk for severe illness
All adults age 65 and older
People who haven’t yet had a COVID vaccine
Is the updated COVID vaccine available yet?
Many pharmacies and healthcare provider offices have the updated vaccine for insured adolescents and adults, and others will be getting it soon. In October, we expect that COVID vaccine for uninsured adults and all children will become available.
When you’re ready to get vaccinated, call your healthcare provider to ask if they’ve got COVID vaccine in stock and to make an appointment.
Will my insurance cover COVID vaccination?
Many health plans will still cover the cost of COVID vaccination, including Washington Apple Health (Medicaid). Not sure if you’re covered? Call your health insurance company or the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
What if I don’t have insurance?
Uninsured adults ages 19+ can get vaccinated at low or no cost through a provider participating in the Adult Vaccine Program (AVP). All kids can get COVID vaccines at no cost until their 19th birthday through a provider in the Childhood Vaccine Program (CVP).
We expect that COVID vaccine for uninsured adults and all kids will become available sometime in October.
Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?
Pharmacies don’t always require I.D. for vaccination, but if you have state-issued I.D., it’s a good idea to bring it. Also bring your health insurance card. This year, you might also find it helpful to have this link handy on your phone: Washington State COVID-19 Vaccine Standing Order. If your pharmacy or healthcare provider tells you you’re not eligible for vaccination, just show them the link.
Can my child get vaccinated at a pharmacy?
Pharmacies are a great option for kids with health insurance. We recommend calling in advance to ask if your local pharmacy has COVID vaccine yet and to find out what ages they serve. Some pharmacies, like Katterman’s, Cascadia and Bob Johnson’s, vaccinate babies as young as 6 months, however availability depends on supply. Other pharmacies, such as Othello Station and Tukwila Station, can vaccinate children 3 and older by appointment.
Where can I find more information about where to get vaccinated?
